This phonics activity enables learners to sound out graphemes to read simple simple words (all contain the ‘u’ sound) to match with the corresponding picture. This set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. How to use it? An adult needs to print and pre-cut the cards into rectangles (dotted lines guide where to cut). The set of cards can be placed on a carpet/table top. Learners read each word by sounding out the individual graphemes featured, they then match each word to the picture from this set. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they sound out the words. Resource Details… The words/pictures included use phonemes/graphemes from Phase 2 only. Blue (Set u) words included - bun (may be confused with ‘cake’ or ‘cupcake’ though in Yorkshire (for example) this is a ‘bun’!) duck/cup/truck/slug/sun/bug/plug/hut/mug Sets a/e/i/o are also available. Each set is a different colour to avoid cards becoming mixed and to help finding a relevant matching card easier. Suggestion Print this resource onto card (and laminate) to improve durability. Card sets (alone or more than one together) can be used to play games e.g. ‘pairs’. This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource details Both versions included have clear starting dots as well as ‘tracing dots’ to follow for every letter. On one the learner writes onto a pale grey which shows each letter shape, on the other the learner writes onto a white letter with a clear grey outline defining each letter shape, encouraging/guiding learners to remain ‘within the lines’. The font used is Sassoon Infant Std - size 100. This activity has been designed to write straight on. Lines (under each day of the week) are included to model how letters look when positioned on a line. There is a clear space at the base of each sheet for learners to write their name and a space at the top (right) to record the number date (to help keep track of progress, over time if these completed activity sheets are kept). These resources have been designed to be used at the end of learning Phase 2 (once all the sounds have been introduced) to check learners knowledge. There are two sheets of the same design with a variation of the challenge provided, enabling you to choose the right level of support for your learners. Who’s it for? These resources have been designed to be used at the end of Phase 2 by Reception/Year 1 pupils - primarily for assessment purposes. This resource is also ideal for supporting older pupils with additional learning needs. How to use it Learners sound out a word (looking at a picture) and write graphemes within each word on the lines provided. The resources included are at two levels, the icon at the lower right side indicates the level of challenge as higher/lower. At the top of both sheets a ‘colour key’ is included - recapping on the Phase 2 sounds and order these are taught. Red sounds are introduced first s a t p i n (so should be most familiar), orange sounds are next m d g o c k, followed by yellow ck e b r u h then green f ff l ll ss which are the last of the Phase 2 sounds. Both resources are provided with and without the (colour coded) Phase 2 sounds at the top at the sheet. All images included within both resources can be sounded out only using sounds within Phase 2. Resource 1 The less challenging sheet (providing more support) focuses on CVC words and under the lines (to write on) includes ‘sound dots’. These are colour-coded supporting learners as to which colour group that sound is from as well as making clear how many sounds are in each word. This sheet also has one CCVC (frog) and one CVCVC (lemon) word at the end. Words are: ant tap pan map cat mat kit (like ‘PE’ or ‘football’ kit) rat bag bat frog lemon (the ‘o’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’) Resource 2 The more challenging sheet (providing less support) includes words with more sounds/using sounds which may be trickier to remember, e.g. ‘ff’, ‘ll’, ‘ss’. Words are: stamp ink nest dog gift (not to be confused with ‘present’!) duck octagon (learners need to know this 2D shape! In addition the ‘a’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’, learners may need help with this) up bell hen (not to be confused with ‘chicken’!) daffodil (learners will need to know the name of this flower or may write ‘flower’ instead. In addition the ‘o’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’ or ‘a’) grass Suggestion These sheets could be laminated and used as a table top activity for learners to access independently using a wipe clean pen. This download includes x15 A4, portrait pdf sheets to practise reading and writing CVC words mostly within Phase 2. Sounds from Phase 3 include j, v, w, z and sh. What’s it for? This activity is interactive and encourages learners to sound out and read simple CVC words and think about what these words mean. Some words of course may have more than one meaning, however for the purpose of this activity there is one illustration for every word. For words which are ‘new’ learners may need to work by process of elimination to identify the correct word/picture combination to record this (in writing) on the sheet provided. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details x5 (colour coded) sets are included. Each set includes one ‘CVC wheel’ to make with easy to follow instructions. Once the wheel is assembled when turned different initial letters are revealed to make x9 CVC words per wheel. CVC words include the sounds ‘an’, ‘et’, ‘ip’, ‘og’ and ‘ug’ ALL words are ‘real’ (not ‘nonsense’) words. The CVC phonics wheel can be reused time and again. There is a clear space for learners to write their name at the base of each sheet (left side). Differentiation Also included is one sheet in two levels of difficulty. The first sheet only has the initial sound missing (easier), the second sheet has ALL letters missing - for learners to write on the lines provided (more challenging). The level of difficulty is indicated by an icon at the base of each sheet (right side) - green for easier, red for more challenging. Suggestion Card is best to use for making this resource as it is stronger and much more robust than paper, making the phonics wheel easier to turn (for learners) and will last longer.
